Beginning your review of German language Quickly: A Grammar for Reading German language
Brent McCulley
Only excellent for seminarians wishing to pick up German as a research language, and quickly. Worked through this independently in about two months or and so. I memorized the vocabulary for each section first and then proceeded to read a chapter and translate the exercises. Lots of Nietzsche which was super fun for me.

Prior to using Wilson's textbook I had never taken a German grade in my life. Prior to using Wilson'south textbook I had never taken a German course in my life. Still, I had already learned other inflected languages which made information technology much easier to pick up High german without an instructor to help clarify the different noun cases and verb tenses. Working through the text at the pace outlined in one of the many appendices, I gained German reading competence that allows me to read complicated texts with the help of a dictionary.

The book will non teach one how to speak High german, but information technology is specifically designed to teach one to read German. Each lesson is clear, includes practice translations of increasing length equally the the reader gets farther along. Information technology as well includes a fundamental for grading your own work. The exercise translations range from funny stories and proverbs to excerpts from Nietzsche and the Bible.

If you need a book that will introduce you to reading High german this is the volume.

The ordering of the chapters is unique and great. It is non "linear" by topic. Nosotros are offset introduced to the nuts of tenses, articles, sentence construction, for example; and so we become into other topics such as adjective and adverb constructions; and and then we revisit elements of sentence construction, which only make more sense at present given that we have covered these other topics. The other resources I've looked at bars themselves to presenting topics "linearly," but which ended up being less effective.

Also there are many useful exercises, and they are engaging and sometimes hilarious. A dainty mixture of intriguing proverbs, quotes from famous literary and philosophical figures, and bits from an ongoing, hilarious fictional narrative consisting in these exercises most a love affair.

While I do experience that I tin can at present translate German language adequately well with the use of a dictionary, I'll find out soon plenty if I tin can actually pass a timed, proficiency exam.

Formatting and layout are pretty poorly done. The editor could've done better. Information technology is not reader-friendly. It is generally just running text, page-to-page, with no sufficient headings (instead, bold font is used to marker off new sections).

The vocabulary is particularly good for those studying the humanities. I've had two years of college German prior to reading this book, but I had forgotten a good deal of it. In addition, most of the first two years of college German is dedicated to applied German and communicating in German language, so it is non incredibly helpful for reading scholarly literature. In that regard, this volume helped immensely. I can read journal articles decently (with the aid of a dictionary). Literary work is nevertheless incredibly hard to read after this book.

This book will not help you lot communicate in German. It actually is just for reading German (which is why I used it, fifty-fifty though I intend to work on my communication skills). You will non do writing. Yous will practise translation. The reading selections are decent (and come from a variety of "scholarly" writings, but with quite a bit of literature).

Why the three stars? My biggest problem with the volume was the introduction of vocabulary over the grade of the affiliate. At the stop of the capacity at that place are word lists, but they ofttimes don't incorporate all of the vocabulary used in the affiliate. This isn't bad in the beginning, only past the terminate of the book you lot are learning complicated grammatical structures AND trying to learn the vocabulary at the aforementioned time. I empathize that this volume is nearly learning to read/research in German language. That is fine for the translation exercises, it gives you dictionary practice. Only for case sentences, it is really distracting to have to motility back and forth between the provided translation and the High german equivalent.

With my prior noesis of German I was able to make it through this book in nigh a month, studying well-nigh two-3 hours a twenty-four hour period. I used Anki on mac for flashcards of the vocabulary.

Due to the way that vocabulary is introduced, I figured out "my" best process around the centre of the book. Before I began to read a affiliate I would brand flash cards of the vocabulary list at the end of the affiliate. Then I would learn the vocabulary. This helped quite a scrap before doing the exercises or examples. And then I would read the chapter. Equally I read, I would highlight words that were not in the list (and also never provided in before chapters). And so flashcards again. Then move on to the adjacent chapter. I will reread the book quickly to castor up on the points, and likewise translations of the earlier chapters should exist easier to sympathize at present that I have the full picture.

As I said, I have prior German experience. This helped with my rapid stride through the book (thirty days with weekends off). The vocabulary I gained was extensive and I already knew a good deal of the grammar or only needed to exist refreshed.

There is a "humanities-oriented" vocabulary listing in the back of the book that I take only perused and it looks like it will exist very helpful. So it is a DEFINITE plus.

I practice have a few worries, notwithstanding. I noticed that some of the vocabulary was not quite accurate (in the chapters, I don't know well-nigh the actress dictionary). This was due to prior training in German and I realized information technology around the middle of the book. From then on I checked the words with other dictionaries and occasionally plant discrepancies. Not too often, but enough to make me worry. Sometimes the word provided in this book was not verbal plenty for what the word actually means. Or I found a translation that was easier to call back/memorize because the one provided by the book was not clear.

The other thing to exist careful of are words that mean something in English, only take a specific context in which that discussion is used. For example: die Gabe. This means souvenir. But it actually means gift in the idea of a talent. A physical gift that you requite someone is Geschenk. But for a skillful part of the book I idea they were synonyms considering the translation given was simply souvenir. Maybe I should have paid more intention when it was introduced, merely either way, it's something to look out for when making flashcards.

I will exist moving on to another "German language for Reading" book. I have heard that the Jannach book is non expert. The number one book recommended is Sandberg'south book which is out of print. It goes for 200-300 on Amazon. Thankfully I found a copy for cheaper. Having looked at information technology, it seems to fix the problem of vocabulary introduced at the aforementioned time as the readings and looks to exist a much more solid book. I have non used it however, so this may be inaccurate, only I have looked through it enough to believe that information technology will be a solid add-on to this book'southward use.

If you are looking to learn to communicate, this is not the book to outset off with. As a resource for graduate students information technology is possibly the cheapest solution that is worthwhile to use. I recommend information technology if you are on a budget (and you probably are if you are a graduate student).

I would not recommend this book for those with no German background because it hops rather readily into complicated vocabulary and grammar.

Yes, as others have pointed out, in that location are some typos, just nothing that really takes away from the exercises. There are some abrasive points. The Frau Meiers/Brieftrager sentences get old. And it is problematic that only some of the answers are in the back. It is difficult to know if you're doing things correctly when there is no way to bank check yourself.
