The XL provides the main instruments, while also sequencing the SP.
The SP is for adding whatever the ROMpler engine of the XL cannot provide, be it sound snippets from the TV, some bass notes from your friend's analogue synth, the sound of you slamming the stove door or whatever.
Since the sound of the XL can be routed through the SP, all that is needed is a stereo recorder. The H4n does the job.
This is a pretty good mix. An XL-7 plus decent cheap sampler will get crazy mileage for electronic music if you learn how to use them. The only thing I'd add is a decent effects processor, like a Lexicon MPX-1.
Ok how about:
Teenage engineering op 1 $849
Basic secondhand Computer monitors (free if you look hard enough but let's say a $1)
Tx81z $50
Kenton USB to midi $100 depending on exchange rate at the time.
All this used gear is currently on sale on finnish marketplace that I've bought and sold lots of gear, so no amazing Ebay deals here.
Boss BR-800 - 150 eur
MPC 2500 XL with CF card reader - 500 eur
Novation Ultranova - 350 eur
I would be lacking a mic, I hope I could get price of some piece a bit down to afford cheap mic. If I couldn't, I could always return some bottles for money.

5h1t just got real
The plan is to use the SQ-80 as master sequencer, and the micromodular as fx box for the rx5, and for weirder noises. Will probably add a cheap fx unit (MPX-100, maybe). I want to do a 4-track EP with this setup.

would be interested to hear this when done, I have the same idea, once I add an external sequencer to my setup.
any way to contribute to thread
MPC2000 = ~$300
ALPHA JUNO 1 - ~$150
Yamaha Tx81z - ~$50
Ensoniq DP4 - ~300
use the rest of the budget for whatever the cheapest record player I could find and a zoom or boss multitrack recorder
Found this thread doing more research, of course...
I'm strangely jealous of these hypothetical and real setups budget setups. I've never been broke enough or rich enough, to just be done with buying equipment, but I really want to be done with buying equipment. Soon, I will just have to say I am done and be done. Honestly, I'd rather have some of the above or below studios and a cabin in the woods for six months then the possibility of more/better stuff coupled with the need to continue working every day. Not that I work for gear only. The gear is the byproduct/reward of having to earn rent, feed myself, etc. Regardless, here's some ideas:
For someone who reads manuals and likes to exploit every feature:
Yamaha AW4416 recorder/mixer/FX ($400)
Ensoniq SD-1 synth/sequencer/internal FX ($350)
Akai S3200 sampler ($250)
Drums? Synthesize your own!
That's $1000. Careful hunting might yield a slight savings; the extra money could buy a used SM57 to expand the range of the sampler even further.
Raw, NO menu diving:
Stereo cassette recorder or DAT recorder ($100)
Mackie CR1604 mixer ($250)
Alesis MM-T8 sequencer ($50)
Casio RZ-1 drum machine ($150)
Arturia MicroBrute synthesizer ($200 used soon enough)
Korg Volca Keys synthesizer ($100 used soon enough)
Korg Volca Bass ($100 used soon enough)
Used Digitech or Zoom multi-FX pedal ($50)
No sampling except for the RZ-1. Actually, a bit limited (needs more voices and FX due to lack of multitrack capabilities), which goes to show that cheap digital is a really, really powerful direction (or that I haven't done enough research on knobby, analog synths because I could never afford the ones I wanted anyways…)...
Lastly, an ambient setup with no consideration of recording:
Yamaha V50 synth/sequencer ($200)
Kawai K5000s synth ($300)
Lexicon MPX-1 FX ($200)
Roland S-760 sampler ($100 - it's possible!)
Used Soundcraft mixer TBD ($200)
Obviously incomplete, but for another few hundred dollars, I'm sure it would be possible to add a handheld recorder that could be used to make field recordings to spit into the Roland AND that could also be used as a master recorder, too.
Roland MV-8000 ($350)
Blofeld ($380)
Micron ($270)

Loads of ways you could go
I'd probably do this (these are prices I paid for this gear recently)
Akai S6000 full memory, FX and drives €300 (probably less now)
DX7 II €200
Some small analogue to create raw material for the akai (no idea what is interesting and cheap right now)
Then you need a desk
Soundcraft K1 desk (16ch) €200
a sequencer (Roland MC50 or Yamaha QX3 would do and either cost maybe €50-100 or so)
And a decent FX unit or two. Roland DEP5 or that kind of thing..
Just about feasible in that budget...with a bit of luck
Gear Nut
I think this a great thread. I never imagined when I started out buying gear that I would amass a large amount and if I knew then how much money has been lost to the pit, I would probably of gotten into painting instead (not really!)
What I would go for tho is
(all items are/have been for sale recently in Ireland on a well known classifieds)
REVOX B77- 390 EUR
Yamaha rm800 16ch desk- 180 eur
Akai- s950- 150 eur
Sm57- 50 eur
Korg volca bass- 110 eur
Alesis mmt-8- 70 eur.
Lives for gear
Future Retro Orb ($400)
Korg Microsampler ($400)
FAT Freebass FB383 ($200)
Could do acid tracks with vocals with that little lot.
MACKIE 1402 or similar - 200.--
Akai S5000 - 250.--
Ensoniq DP4 - 250.--
4 Track Tascam - 100.--
Waldorf Rocket - 200.--
I like this thread, far more inspiring than the endless gear fantasy list threads.
For a budget but awesome otb studio I was thinking I could squeeze this together:
mpc 2000 ($300), alpha juno ($200), used microbrute ($200), tx81z($50), portastudio ($100), microverb ($50), mackie 1202 ($100)
I'd probably be happy with this setup except for needing more fx.
Alternative setup (I'm going to be doing this all day in my head now):
boss dr-660 ($80), ensoniq asr-x ($200 - has fx from the dp4 as well right?), alpha juno ($200), used bass station 2, ($300), mackie 1202 ($100), portastudio ($100)
Use the extra $20 saved on the drum machine for a nice hit of crack or something... Or just pocket it and congratulate yourself on your thriftiness.
Gear Addict
Octatrack
cheap Rompler or MC 505

Zoom R8 - $175
Yamaha RY30 - 300
[all prices are for used gear]
good bases from which to learn synthesis and drum synthesis.
Next add a sampler (If you want to go that way)
But you could do a lot of damage with this setup
Lives for gear
For a minimal ambient setup i would start with:
Akai headrush E2 100-120
Strymon Blue Sky 200
Yamaha MG mixer 100-150
Sm57 50
Casio SK1,Yamaha PSR-36 100-120 with a bit of luck
Used Cheap Electric Acoustic Guitar 100-150
Misc Used Percussion 50-80
Used Tascam or Zoom portable Recorder and/or Tape/MiniDisk recorder 150-200
and get a DX synth, alesis mmt-8,a sampler and maybe a drum machine along the way if needed
Gear Head
Yep, finally got to the good place just need a digital recorder, some FX pedals and I've got my home sweet home:
Motif6---500
Mpc500---250
Ub202mixr---50
Ipodtouch/Jamdock---150
PowerdSpeakr---50
Gear Guru
OP1 - second hand $600
Micro-brute - second hand $220
Korg Volca beats - second hand $130
2 Track cassette deck - second hand $50
I love this thread and it happens that my current set-up is around that price :
Minibrute (350€ used) + Pocket Piano (250€) + Microsampler (180€ used) + digital field recorder to feed the korg (150€) + 4 tracks recorder (80€ used) + diy spring reverb (50€)
I have to admit that the pocket piano is probably not the best option for a poly synth, but I love its arp and I use the minibrute to control and filter it.
I load the microsampler with sounds from anywhere (the tr808 of a friend, iphone apps, a classic moog, monotron, flute, real handclap...) it's surely not a classic sampler, it's more an update of the casio sk1 and for me it's perfect.
It's a little bit more of 1000€ but with this the world is yours !

I have this current small setup in my dining room.
JP-8000 - $450
TR-707 - $150
Volca Bass + PS - $170
Kaossilator - $100
Boss Mircomix 4 - $20
Maudio Omnistudio - $20
Akai RPM4 - $75
Total $985
All Ive got at the moment is an Op-1 and an Octatrack and Ive never made more music. My $4000 monitors are nowhere to be seen and my $2500 interface is at my partners mums house. Never been happier
Lives for gear
SoundCraft EPM 8 Mixer (used) ~150USD
MicroBrute ~230 (used)
Electribe ESX ~300 (used)
Korg MS2000R ~270 (used)
Korg Mini Kaoss Pad ~50 (used)
Some Old Used DAT deck ~50 (used) (I actually did look this number up on eBay) OR Cassette deck ~25 or maybe free.
I went about 50USD over, but I bet you could get all this for a cool grand. Shit you could easily subtract the MicroBrute in favor of one or more other items, I sure with the ESX and MS2000 you could get where you are going...
I would use the ESX as the master clock. But let the Brute and MS2000r sequence themselves. Record percussion patches into the ESX. I would use the main stereo outs for all the percussion but the kick drum. One of the alt channels for the kick (mono) and one for resampled synths (mono). MicroBrute for mono bass. Harmony on the MS2000r, stereo out to mixer. Korg KP mini on a send/return. So, you would still have either 3 mono channels left or one mono channel and a stereo channel left depending on how you routed the MS2000. So you could either down grade the mixer to something smaller or call it room to grow.
nice thread this is pretty much my setup below except an mpc60 (although i think i'll be 'upgrading' to the 1k soon) in place of the 1000 & a few extra effects - midiverb 2, alesis bitrman, montron filter...
mpc 1k w/ some upgrades - $400 - main sampler/sequencer
boss sp505 - $150 - secondary sampler, fx unit
korg dw8000 - $175 - pads/leads
volca bass - $110 - basslines
heavy/cheap old tascam mixer off craigslist - $150 - tie them all together + distortion
and to whoever said you'd be better off with a computer for this type of budget...
Lives for gear
I cannot do it for a $1000. But for $2000, I could have a whole entire OTB home studio.
Itf i had to do this I'd get a mpc1000 and a minibrute but I'd still have to master in the pc. For completely otb I'd get the inferior mpc500 and a zoom r8 or 16 depending on the deals i got on the other 2.??
Gear Addict
1. SP 404sx - $300
2. Volca Drums - $100
3. Poly61 - $250
4. Ensoniq 16+ w/ 808 and waveboy disks - $200
5. SM58 - $50
6. A generic 4 track cassette recorder - $100
I'm maybe being $100 too generous with my 2nd hand prices, but damn that there will give you dopeness for days.

Man, this is making me feel nostalgic and charitable.
I feel like making this package and giving it to someone in my community.
Bit vauge.. as when getting into it you kind of need to think ahead... it's never just 1000 and being done with it..
01v
MPC 2/3000
a dat machine or another sampler just to record on
jv1080
cheap controller k/b with a few sounds in it like a dx7 or something.
something along those lines..
